The thing is, I was never a fan of Star Wars but heard some nice arguments which may encourage me to play it. In the past I have played World of Warcraft (screw me). While playing this game, it was no problem for me that I didn't know anything about the Warcraft history. Does it matter for the Star Wars game?

You do not need to worry all that much about knowledge of the films. But if you want more back story and insight into the world that this game is set in i suggest you play Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. They are both set a short time earlier than The Old Republic so they will give good background information.
I don't know, but SWTOR is shaping up to be really good, it has full voice overs. :D
Not sure. I think having some background knowledge would help, but i don't think it is required.

Just try to play it for once. And once you're there, you will be slowly learning the backstories and stuff.

From the trailers i've seen this is looking very promising.
I often think this myself before buying certian games, espiecally games that are part of a long franchise that I've never bothered with before.
I dont know if it will matter but it's always nice to know something about the real stories/movies. But aslong as i enjoy a game allong the way i dont really care about it...
it's an star wars game all right, but judging from the offline games 1,2, it's not entirely star wars.
It's easier to think of it as oblivion with warp space and light sabers.

i was interested in this game a while back but i think it will be a while before i pick it up if d3 is released.
I too, am not that big of a star wars fan but I loved this game. Maybe it's the genre, and the open endness. But I loved it.
I signed up for the beta to check if I will buy it.
I hope it will be a good game since I like star wars, but the game doesn't really have a connection with the main story of the movies.

You can jump right into Star Wars. Usually, you'll be a bit confused as to why things happen, just like in WoW, but otherwise you can play just fine.
